This method zooms in on post-disaster recovery, a crucial but often overlooked aspect of disaster management. While there’s been progress in understanding how communities bounce back from single hazards, we still have a lot to learn about recovery from multi-hazard events. Most existing studies focus on specific types of hazards or regions, leaving a gap in our understanding of recovery dynamics on a broader scale.

To fill this gap, the study compares economic recovery after both single and multi-hazard events across continents. It uses nighttime light data as a proxy for economic recovery, tracking changes in brightness over time after different types of disasters. By comparing recovery patterns, the study aims to shed light on the unique challenges and dynamics of bouncing back from multi-hazard events.

The findings will not only help policymakers and aid organizations refine their disaster management strategies but also pave the way for future research into the social and economic factors that influence recovery in multi-hazard scenarios.
