The Disaster Risk Gateway wiki website is hosted by the British Geological Survey (BGS) under these terms of use. By entering this site, the user (‘you’) accepts these terms of use. These terms are read in conjunction with the standard BGS website terms and conditions provided at https://www.bgs.ac.uk/legal-and-policy/terms-of-use.

The Disaster Risk Gateway has been developed as part of the MYRIAD-EU project. The MYRIAD-EU project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101003276.

The European Research Executive Agency (the Agency) is not responsible for the content of the Disaster Risk Gateway. Any information expressions or views contained are that of the contributing party and not the Agency.

Your account and password

The information you provide when registering for a Disaster Risk Gateway account will be used to verify your identity when using Disaster Risk Gateway’s contribute functionality. Your information will be managed according to current data protection legislation, including the UK Data Protection Act 2018, and the General Data Protection Regulation. Further information can be found in our Privacy Notice.

To create or use a Disaster Risk Gateway account you must be over 16 years old.

If you choose, or you are provided with, a user identification code, password or any other piece of information as part of our security procedures, you must treat such information as confidential. You must not disclose it to any third party.

We have the right to disable any user identification code or password, whether chosen by you or allocated by us, at any time, if in our reasonable opinion you have failed to comply with any of the provisions of these terms of use.

If you know or suspect that anyone other than you knows your user identification code or password, you must notify us immediately at Disaster Risk Gateway.

Use of your data

All personal data provided by you, including any account information (name, username, email address and affiliation) will be managed in line with the UK Data Protection Act 2018 and the General Data Protection Regulation. Further information can be found in our Privacy Notice.

Any contributions (see Contribute to Disaster Risk Gateway) you make to Disaster Risk Gateway are with the understanding that all materials you provide (text, images, etc.) will be publicly available and are required to follow the content standards.

Contributing content to Disaster Risk Gateway

When you engage with the Disaster Risk Gateway to contribute or edit content or to contact other users, you warrant that your contribution complies with these terms and agree you will be liable to us and fully indemnify us for any breach of that warranty. If you are a consumer user, this means you will be responsible for any loss or damage we suffer as a result of your breach of warranty.

If you engage with our Contribute functionality by uploading and depositing text, images or other, you agree:

  • To License your contributing material under the terms of the Creative Commons CC BY licence 4.0
  • Prior to contributing material to ensure you own the necessary rights or have all necessary permissions from the owner of the material to upload or deposit to the Disaster Risk Gateway
  • To include any permissions from the copyright owner in your submitted content
  • Liability regarding use of anything you upload or deposit may lie with you as the contributor


If are unsure about ownership of any content do not contribute this material until you have the correct permissions for your use.

We will neither be responsible nor liable to any third party, for the content or accuracy of any content posted by you or any user of Disaster Risk Gateway.

We may have to disclose your identity to any third party who informs BGS that any content posted or uploaded by you to Disaster Risk Gateway constitutes a violation of their intellectual property rights, or of their right to privacy. We will inform you in advance if we believe we are required to disclose your identity.

Content standards

These content standards apply to all material you contribute to Disaster Risk Gateway and to any interactive services associated with it.

You must comply with the spirit and the letter of the following standards. The standards apply to each part of any contribution as well as to its whole.

Contributions must:

  • be accurate (where they state facts)
  • be genuinely held (where they state opinions)
  • comply with applicable law in the UK and in any country from which they are posted


Contributions must not:

  • contain any personal information
  • contain any material which is defamatory to any person
  • contain any material which is obscene, offensive, hateful or inflammatory
  • promote sexually explicit material
  • promote violence
  • promote discrimination based on race, sex, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation or age
  • infringe any copyright, database right or trademark of any other person
  • be likely to deceive any person
  • be made in breach of any legal duty owed to a third party, such as a contractual duty or a duty of confidence
  • promote any illegal activity
  • be threatening, abuse or invade another's privacy, or cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety
  • be likely to harass, upset, embarrass, alarm or annoy any other person
  • be used to impersonate any person, or to misrepresent your identity or affiliation with any person give the impression that they emanate from us, if this is not the case advocate, promote or assist any unlawful act such as (by way of example only) copyright infringement or computer misuse


Copyright and associated Intellectual Property Rights

The Disaster Risk Gateway is a collaborative site developed by BGS as part of the MYRIAD-EU project. Copyright and any associated Intellectual Property Rights in the content contributed by project partners of the MYRIAD-EU project will be owned/jointly owned, or licensed, by that contributor/s. Any Copyright, know-how or associated Rights created or contributed by BGS remain under the ownership of the United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI). Ownership of any Intellectual Property contributed by 3rd parties remains with that contributing party.

Licence for reuse

With the exception of any logos, trademarks, or anything identified otherwise, the material contained in Disaster Risk Gateway is released under the Creative Commons CC BY licence 4.0.

By contributing any material to Disaster Risk Gateway you agree to release your contributions under the terms of CC BY licence 4.0.

Notice and takedown policy

BGS and UKRI have the right to remove any contribution you make to Disaster Risk Gateway we deem to not comply with these terms of use. If you are a copyright holder and are concerned that you have found material on our website belonging to you, for which you have not granted permission, or where permission is automatically granted by way of national/international law, please contact us at IPR@bgs.ac.uk stating:

  • Your contact details
  • The full bibliographic details of the material
  • The exact and complete URL where you found the material
  • Proof that you are the rights holder and a statement confirming that you are the rights holder or are an authorised representative

Given proof of valid objection, BGS will remove the relevant material from the website.
